This T-shirt celebrates the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupé’s class victory at 12 Hours of Sebring. The vehicle was driven by Bob Bondurant and Jo Schlesser.
The 12 Hours of Sebring has also been nicknamed ‘The Flood’ due to the tremendous downpours that drivers had to contend with during the race. Brief bouts of torrential rain and stormy winds left parts of the course under up to 20 cm water. But despite the poor visibility and several bad accidents, the race always went on.
The mechanics of the no. 15 Shelby Daytona Coupé had to drill holes in its floor to allow the water to drain away. The drivers managed to ‘surf’ on and as the rain gradually subsided, they crossed the finish line in fourth place in the overall rankings and first place in the GT 5.0 class rankings.
The Shelby Daytona was a Coupé developed by Carroll Shelby on the basis of his AC Cobra roadster. It was specially built for motor racing, especially as a rival for Ferrari in the GT class. Only six Daytonas were built in 1964 and 1965 as Shelby turned his focus back to the Ford GT40 project.
The 4.7-litre Ford V8 engine had 380 HP at 7,000 rpm and enabled the car (which weighed just 1043 kilograms) to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds. With the four-speed gearbox, the top speed was just over 300 km/h.
